In most cases on these forums you get hit with a stack of technical jargon and things to try, mostly confusing to the person that's asking for help and complicating the situation. I find that in 9 out of 10 ocassions, there is a very simply solution that nobody puts on the Internet or is not put where those that need it can easily find it.
Try this first, it can't hurt and just ensures that you have the correct drivers ready and it forces Twain set up. Reason: Windows XP and perhaps all the other versions, will only remember the last path to manually look for a driver, why I do not know, but what an oversight from Microsoft aye? All you are doing here is sending Windows to the correct place (Your Installation Disk or Downloaded files) by choosing the location of the required files. If on Disk, just select the drive you have it in and click [Next] or [Ok] or whatever continues to do the job.

Procedure:
To install the Twain driver:
•Verify that the scanner appears in Device Manager (Start - Settings - Control Panel - double-click "System")
•Select "Hardware"
•Select "Device Manager".
•The scanner is located under "Other Devices"
•Double-click "Your Scanner".
•Select "Reinstall Driver" to display the "Wizard updated equipment".
•Click "Next".
•Select "Install from a list or specific location" and click "Next." .
•Click "Browse" and locate the CD drive with the Scanner CD-ROM in it (e.g. E: )
•You can then choose the correct driver (English) and it is done.
Only if required: Re-install scanner and it will include the Twain driver.
