HDD thermal cutout?

I've been attempting to restore an old athlon 64 x2 3800+ machine to working order for a family member. However, it has been locking up regularly. At first, I though it would be an issue with the dedicated graphics card, an archaic 7300gs. None the less, the same thing happened using the IGP, a 6100 series chip.

I can all but guarantee that it is not the CPU, which is in fine condition and is never going above 44 degrees. It is also not the Ram, it locks up regardless of the configuration of the DDR pc3200 sticks.

This leaves the HDD as the prime suspect. Upon freezing, the drive, which is usually very loud goes silent, and the LED indicator goes fully yellow, not flashing. The display itself stays on, with windows itself showing, but not responding. If it was the CPU, RAM, or GPU, surely it would completely die? Display et all.

The drive also gets very, very hot. Far hotter than the 1TB drive in my main PC. Could the crashing be caused by the hard drive either failing or cutting out due to overheating? Or is it something I have overlooked or misunderstood?

Oh, and one last thing, the crashes seem to occur during more HDD intensive tasks, such as installing drivers and extracting files.

Thanks for reading,

Chris.
