I have an older build (2009):
ASUS PX58D-E motherboard
i7 975 Extreme Processor
CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory
SAPPHIRE 100269HDMI Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
Antec TruePower New TP-750 750W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.3 / EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS
Recently my system has been restarting upon startup after 2-15 minutes. I've removed all extraneous hardware (optical drives, etc) and tested startup with a different video card (less power) but the problem still exists (although with the other VC it usually stays up longer). I've cycled through all memory dimms and the problem still exists. I'm going to try a new power supply, but if that doesn't work is it safe to say it's the motherboard? If so, is there an economical way to reuse the remaining components; in other words are mobos still manufactured that support i7 975 extreme processors?
Thanks!
Derek

They no more manufacture X58 Motherboards, but you can get Used from Ebay. Oh an also dont get Asus X58 motherboards, they suck. Get the Gigabyte Ga-X58A-UD7/UD5

have you looked at your heat sink on your cpu to make sure its still working, jump into the bios when you first boot up and check the cpu temps to see if its a heat issue.

Bosox if it does come down to a motherboard issue try finding the same one if you can, it will be a easy MB swap and you will be up and running with out even having to redo the OS. If you cant then you most likely are looking at a new cpu, MB, and OS as everything else will transfer over to the new system.

Mojo not sure where you're getting that Asus boards suck, they are on the same level as Gigabyte. I also have a Asus rampage 3 extreme board running a i7 950 overclocked @ 4.9ghz, been running strong for 4-5 years with that OC no issues at all.

Not saying all Asus boards sucks, saying that they didnt do a great job in making the X58 board, for example on a P6X58D Premium there are only 22 multipliers, and then when you go to CPU-Z it says it can go to 23 but nope you cant. Also the Audio ports are crap, you can not retask any audio ports. while on the other hand gigabytes X58A UD7 multipliers can exceed to 40 which helps a lot when your overclocking, and you can also retask their audio ports.

I did monitor the CPU temps...nothing out of the ordinary (~105 F). I'll let you know what happens when I try the new PSU tonight, fingers crossed that does the trick. Not in the mood for a new build :) ....mostly for financial reasons....

depending on what cpu you have then the multiplier is right. My 950 has a X23 and can go up to a 24 but even number multipliers are very unstable for overclocking. I believe the 930 and below used a 21 multiplier and could step up to 22. The first gen cpus you had to play with the block and not the multiplier, now intel has switched it around and you play with the multiplier and leave the block alone.

So I bought a new PSU and the problem still persisted so I'm thinking it has to be the mobo. Based on my information above, is there a specific type of motherboard I need to purchase to work with the i7-975 extreme? I'm not worried about OS, etc., I just don't want to have to buy a whole new system....
Thanks!

there aren't a lot of x58 boards left out there. Quick search with amazon looks like your going to pay around 200-300$ for a decent board then still have to get a OS on top of that, unless you can call Microsoft and get it transferred to the new board. It might be cheaper in the long run to get a new 1150 board and cpu, everything else will transfer over to the new system.

The only other option is to get on ebay and see what you can find second hand. If your wanting to stay with the x58 platform look at any Asus ROG borad, I have two rampage 3 extreme x58 boards still running strong and a few newer 1155 socket gene boards. All of them rock solid and overclock very well.
