I was thinking about upgrading to a AMD 8350 from a phenom II black edition and was wondering when I install the new processor if I'll need to reformat my hard drive or if it will load up with no issues.
Thanks

Shouldn't need to do anything with your hard drive or OS, although it's always possible. You'll want to check your mobo support page though to make sure you've got the appropriate BIOS version to support the chip flashed to your board.

If you have an AM3 board you will not be able to do that upgrade, you will need an am3+. The am3+ chips use thicker pins, thus an am3 cpu fits in a am3+ no problem but an am3+ wont fit in an am3 socket mobo.

FYI: Pheonom II = am3, FX-_ _ _ _ = am3+

I have a Gigabyte 990FX that supports the AM3+ chip set. The last time I built my PC I had to reformat and I lost my windows key. I'm only replacing the processor this time around though.

A 990FX board, your good. Double check bios version at gigabytes website, but 95% chance you are already good.
