Upgrade path from GTX 680?

Hi guys

I'm looking for your inspired knowledge. I am I guess what the industry would call an enthusiast gamer, so my rig isn't on the cheap and cheerful side. I enjoy first person shooters/RPG games like Metro and Crysis 3 etc. I am not a COD fan any longer and I've never liked the BF series.

Currently have a GTX 680 and have been wondering about what the next step is. The most important factor is that I ONLY game at 1920x1080 on a single 27 inch monitor (second monitor is a 22inch old cheapie for running team speak and core temp etc).

The other thing is that I prefer to run games on stiff settings even if it means a small FPS hit. Crysis 3 is one example. I deliberately run higher settings than what are recommended for a 680 and as a consequence I don't get 60 FPS all the time.

Now my card is nearing its second? birthday, I'm feeling its time to upgrade when the next round of games make their appearance.

So, your opinions please on my options.

- Buy another 680 and SLI (have a big enough PSU I think)

-Buy a 690/7990 or even Titan (not keen on this due to stories about unsolvable stuttering problems)

-Buy 780/780ti or AMD equivalent

-Wait for GTX 880 and see what price it comes out at.

Questions then, which of these options will generate the best performance gain (looking for that rock steady 60 FPS in all weathers) for the outlay?

I am a bit of an Nvidia fan but would try AMD if the price was right (second hand 7990 can be had for reasonable money on Amazon). Also I don't do any rendering or mining or compute type stuff, I only play games.

Thanks in advance.

List your specs please.

Foe Nvidia... a 780/780ti.

I would recommend waiting for the 8xx series comes out and see where they fall pricewise. The 7xx's might drop a little as well.
Your 680 is still a pretty good card at 1080p.

My specs

3820 CPU
Asus Sabertooth X79
Palit GTX 680 4GB
16 GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
Samsumg 830 SSD 256GB
Samsung evo 1TB coming soon.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Will investigate the 780/880 when the time comes. I just want to be able to run games at or around max settings without penalty at 1080.

Getting a 690 wouldn't make any sense, as it's slightly worst than two 680 (for core clock reasons). The same with getting a 7990.

So you would only have the 780 and the 780ti as options, or wait for the 880...

If you want the best, just get the 780ti, unbeatable card.

Hi,

going green I would suggest a 780 or 780ti if the price is right as the difference may not be noticable at 1080p.
Or go red, and grab a 290 or 290x for a slight higher VRAM available.
I am still using a 680 4gb on my old rig and running at 1080p and 1440p and it is still good enough to run most new games including sniper elite 3 at a reasonable fps (I know it is not a fast-paced game).
A 780 or 290 would be my recommendation as games has progressed and you can sell the 680 as the value is still acceptable. in about 1-2 years time, that 680 will be 3 generation back...
Laterrrrr you can get another 780 and 290 do SLI or CF like me...you will be happy.

Cheers.

Looking on TH it would seem the 980 is slightly beyond what the 780 ti offers.

I am particularly interested in being able to game using the Oculus Rift or similar in the future to go gaming instead of having a pricey 4K or 3D monitor.

If I commit to a 780ti now, would I be sacrificing the ability to play games at or near maximum settings whilst using the rift?
