I've been looking into setting up a system in my home that will allow me to have all my media on one centralized HTPC that can be accessed by multiple Raspberry Pis running XBMC.

The question is will my plan work?

Create an HTPC to manage my data.
Do a RAID 1 or 5 for redundancy. (I've been debating using a NAS or just having everything stored internally on the HTPC)
Use Windows Media Center or XBMC to manage the media in storage.
Make a Raspberry Pi for each TV running XBMC to stream data from my HTPC/NAS.

Also, if I just do a NAS, can I install XBMC on a normal computer to manage the data or is it best to have a dedicated HTPC?

Solution
It sounds like what you want is a server PC for your data, and then use Ras Pi's with XBMC as your playback devices. That is a little different than an HTPC, which would typically serve both functions. I would think you would be better off with Windows, Ubuntu, or FreeNAS on your server PC, then install XBMC on your client devices. Doing file management through XBMC on your server isn't going to be much fun, in my opinion. But yes, overall the plan should work.

A commercial NAS (Synology, Qnap, Thecus) can support all the functions you are interested in. Remember that RAID is NOT backup. If the data is important you need to have multiple independent copies. Commercial NAS units have USB or eSATA ports for backup storage.
