Second Hard Drive Stopping

I have a secondary hard drive in my computer (500gb) and recently when moving files over to it, the speed will drop to 0 and then going to access the drive in My Computer comes up with "Could not be accessed due to I/O error" or something. I'll have to restart my computer and it'll work fine for a few minutes until I move files onto it. Sometimes I can move gigabytes at a time and it'll be fine, but mostly anything over 1mb stops it. I'm running Windows 8. Let me know if you need anything else.

Might try replacing the cable going to the drive, doesn't sound like that would fix it.

When in doubt replace it, any strange behavior out of a hard disk is not a good thing.

I figured I'd probably have to replace it, but I was wondering if there was a simpler fix that would at least work for a few weeks or month, since I don't really have extra money to spend on a hard disk right now.

Bump, still wondering if there's anything I can do for short term? At least to move stuff off of he drive

If it works at all, begin copying files to another drive, burn DVDs, or use removable media like flash drives.
