Hello. How would I completely destroy a hard drive? I have some old hard drive that I want to erase and I don't want anyone finding about my neo-pets activity back in the day or them terrible selfies :ouch:

So, if I just soak it in water, will it destroy it?

low-level format using the vendor's tool. I know Seagate and WD have them available for download. There are also plenty of erasure programs out there that will write zeros to the drive a few times to make recovery nearly impossible.

Then the old drill method is pretty good to make doubly sure.

Take a hammer to it. That's one sure-fire way... if you really want to be thorough, and if you have the right screwdriver bits, take off the top cover and run something sharp across the platter(s). [strike]Put it in the microwave.[/strike] Set it on fire. Power drills work wonders, too. There are lots of creative ways to destroy a hard drive.

In all honesty, unless you're trying to hide something from someone with an extensive ability to do data recovery (...like law enforcement...), just run DBAN on it, cause a little bit of physical damage so that it isn't readily usable, and toss it. No normal person will ever be able to get any information off of it.

Damage via water? Yes, but the data would likely be recoverable.

Well, I've just smacked the drive with a magnet for good 5 minutes. Its an old Seagate IDE Hard Drive. I don't have anything questionable on it but I really wouldn't want anyone finding my stuff. If its the NSA or GCHQ (in the UK) then I wouldn't care. I just hope they won't sell that info lol!
