VCR shuts down after 5 minutes

I have connected my freeview set top box to an old VCR which is then connected to my old TV [which has no scart connector] via its aerial. The setup works great. I get all the channels listed and the reception and picture quality is first rate.

HOWEVER after 5 minutes viewing the VCR automatically turns itself off, thereby breaking the connection. Once I turn it on again it works fine – for another 5 minutes, then off it goes again.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?

The VCR has no name badge on it – I picked it up at a car boot sale – all it says is SB105 Videoplus Video Cassette Recorder. And it didn't come with a remote. When playing a video it works absolutely fine – no cut outs, no power failures, no problems at all. This problem only seems to relate to the setup with the STB and the old TV.

All help greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Faulty 20+ year old piece of equipment. Might be an issue with the RF modulator on the VCR but cant say anything for certian. Any repair on this would have to cost a massive amount more then it is worth.

Hello,

Try to connect a TV cable into the VCR's RF In, if you still have an aerial antenna or something like that. It is possible that the VCR enters standby because of the lack of signal (5 mins for the turn-off time is too much of a coincidence). Please provide a photo with the front of the device (maybe the VCR has not a built-in TV tuner, in which case boosted1g is right).

Thanks, Cristi72. I have taken a couple of photos but can't see how to attach them.

The preferred solution around here is to use http://imgur.com: upload your picture(s) and post the links here.

Thanks. Ok, here are the links...

Unfortunately, the images are too low-resolution to see anything... Have you used a phone camera?

EDIT: is this the device:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX1qc8asmh0 ?

If so, it seems to be a Philips clone (Aristona) and it has indeed a built-in TV tuner; if it has the same processor as my Philips (VR676), you must use the remote control to programm the clock and also deactivate the stand-by function.

Thanks, Cristi72. Yes is the answer on both counts. I did use a cell phone camera - all I had. And yes, you are correct, the VCR shown in the YouTube video is indeed the one I am using. Thank you too for explaining what I need to do. All i have to do now is find a remote control that will enable me to access the menu functions as the VCR came without one.

PS - Am picking yiur reply as best answer.
