My Dell dimension 4300 will not power up..ONLY when the cmos battery is installed!! When I take out the battery it powers up ok. I replaced the battery and the same problem. I did not mess with the jumpers on the mobo. Just removed the battery for a day and the power cable was detached so no power was available. Any Ideas what may be causing this?

You may have been caught by a common error. The full proper sequence when resetting the BIOS is:

1. Move the BIOS Reset jumper to the Reset position.
2. Remove the battery for at least 15 seconds, then replace.
3. Move the Reset jumper back to its normal "run" setting.
4. Power on and immediately go into BIOS Setup. Go to the last set of screens and choose the option to "Load Optimized defaults".
5. If you know you had specific things customized - like, what is the Boot Priority Sequence, did you have a RAID array set up, etc. - reset those items properly.
6. SAVE and EXIT to boot.

Steps 4 and 5 are important. Merely powering up after a BIOS reset may NOT load the correct settings and allow your system to boot.

ok thanks and now for what fixed this...The bios does not have an option to load default settings..however as you mentioned to remove the jumper made me look at the mobo closely and find the rts jumper and pwsd jumper and what I did was move the jumper to rts for 10 secs, and back to pwsd and this allowed the bootup to work...of course also I removed the cmos battery the entire time and included an extra 10minutes for this!!! wala...Im back to businesss...thanks
