would it be any good for me to do crossfire or sli when i'm going to use a single 1080p monitor really the benq xl2420z also the cards i was thinking of were the gtx 780 or the r9 290.
You'll end up with a pair of GTX 980s in SLI, of course. But your first play is to only buy one at first and then get the second if you feel you need more power (unlikely).
SLI or Crossfire is over kill for 1080 even with 144hz... Instead of dropping $500 on an extra card and $350 on that Ben Q Monitor I would seriously consider putting that $850 or so into a 40”-50” 1080 HDTV instead... It will blow you gaming experience away!

Don't listen to ruecklm14, I think he's in 4K land, since his 1st link points to a 4K benchmark... Anyways just google best graphics card for a 1080 setup. Trust me you don't need to SLI 780's or Crossfire R9's for that.
i have two 780 classifieds in sli with a 144hz monitor and love them but would highly recomend going with the 290s over the 780s i wish i had but 290s in xfire will get damn hot so be ready for that
