intel core i7-4510u vs intel core i5-4210u

Solution
If you be doing photo editing or video editing or even designing programmes. I would persoannly recommend the i7 as it is a hyper thread which means more tasks can be perform much quicker.

I'll be mainly using the laptop for taking notes, studying purposes, research, I'm not entirely sure if my course will require certain designing/drafting programs. And during school breaks, I will be using it for light gaming. Nothing too big as I do not buy many games.

The core i7 has a higher base clock rate, max turbo frequency and more cache.
You can expect about 20% performance improvement.
Both of these are dual core with hyper-threading.

For running office programs and browsing the internet, the core i5 should be plenty.
For CAD programs or games, both these processors are pretty weak.
Stronger offerings include the Core i7-4712MQ or Core i7-4712HQ at 37W or the Core i7-4710MQ or Core i7-4710HQ at 47W.
These are quad core processors with hyper-threading and much stronger graphics as well.

I mention the power of these processors here because the U series processors offered in the linked laptop are 15W low power offerings.
This means longer battery life and potentially slimmer, lighter laptops but at the cost of performance for CPU or GPU intensive applications.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to check with a friend since he's taken the course to make sure if there are programs that I'll be needing. I'd think engineering course would, but I'm just going to double check.

No worries just tell me what kind of programmes. But to be honest, I wouldn't go with an ultra low voltage when it comes to programming. ;)
