Weird PC problems, not sure where to start

Built my PC about a year ago, put it together with my uncle. No problems for quite a while, then earlier this year when windows forced the update to 8.1, some weird things started happening. My PC hangs on the BIOS screen on startup, and the only way I can get it to boot is to go into my BIOS settings and force boot.

That problem aside, after I get it to boot and I log in, it used to hang on a gray screen with me unable to launch or do anything for about 5 minutes. Just now, it hung on the welcome screen for a while, then went to a black screen with a cursor for a good 5 minutes, then went to my desktop.

I really don't know where to start with these problems, I've been lazy and just kind of let them pile up and not given them the attention I should have. Any help is appreciated.

there have been some iffy updates for both win7 and win8.some have even been pulled by ms.if you can do a system restore to before this happened i would do it.and i would also disable automatic updates for windows as well.i wait a week or so after patch tuesday to download and install updates so they can pull the bad ones and get it right.

Unfortunately, restoration is not an option, and I have since turned off automatic updates. Still need a fix to these issues. What could cause it to hang at bios, but work fine with boot override?

i would then do a search for bad ms updates for win8 and manually delete them.unfortunately once win8.1 is installed, the only way i know to get rid of it is a fresh install of win8.do this as a last resort as i really havent had a problem with 8.1.

I'm not even entirely convinced these problems stem from a bad 8.1 update, it just seemed to happen around that time. I'm looking for someone to help me out and explain possible reasons the system is behaving like it is.

well,i dont know any other details pertaining to software installations, etc.all i know is the problem stemmed from a win update.unless you have other info this is all i have to go on.why not google computer problems after win8.1 update and see if it looks familiar.

Well I messed with some BIOS settings, got my drive to boot normally. Now the problem I need help with, which I'm sure is unrelated to a windows update, is that when I log into windows, both of my screens are grey for 2 or so minutes, and my taskbar is empty. No programs run, but after a while it just pops back to normal like nothing ever happened. Anyone have any thoughts?
