The R9 290 is the best price/performance card. You should definitely go for it.
Also, don't get the MSI. Go for the Gigabyte,Sapphire or XFX R9 290. I know a couple of people who have had MSI cards and they all failed in less that a year.
Crossfire/SLI isn't really needed if you have just one monitor. You would be better of with 1x R9 290 than 2xR9 280X.
And yes,it would be a great idea to upgrade your monitor to a 1080p one.
All the best. ;)

For a 1080P monitor you could even get by with a R9 270X!!! So your 280X will be fine!!!
You could probably dual monitor your 1080P with a 900P with the 280X, I'm not sure though.

Its going to be hard to sell used AMD cards, most people are not buying them with all the Mining cards that have been unloaded
Crossfire is a cheaper option and the second card will provide some boost (as a rule of thumb i say you can add 50% performance)
Depends on if your PSU can support X-Fire though as well
