This computer has
an AMD 64 X2 5200+ 2.7 Ghz processor,
an MSI MS - 7309 motherboard ,
2 GB Kingston DDR2 Ram,
OS - WIndows 7 Update 1.
Generic iBall 250 Watt PSU.

It was working alright last time I used it. And today, when I started up the computer, there is a small beep. The CPU fan whirs, the motherboard posts correctly and the machine shuts down when the Windows start up screen shows. I tried to enter Bios (which I did) and the machine shuts down after 7 seconds. No matter what key I press, the machine is shutting down after 5 - 7 seconds thus leaving me no time to check what is wrong with it.

Any help, guys? Is it the PSU? Or the motherboard has died and I am in denial?

Solution
The fact that you are able to get to windows startup indicates that you have posted correctly - and that there isn't a bios issue - the one beep likely means a successful post in this case. If you are curious - there are more codes:

You could check the PSU - undo all the wires and do the paperclip trick to start it up - let it run for a minute if it can - then power it down. If it does all this - there is unlikely a thermal issue with the PSU - if it fails - then buy a decent PSU made by SeaSonic.

No.

Spending around $75+ you can get a quality PSU that will last you for a good long time. Look up the TOM'S Who's Who in power supplies and find a brand made by Seasonic - For example - All XFX PSUs are made by Seasonic.

Ok - pick out a well reviewed cheap PSU on newegg or whatever site you like. If I suggest a power supply - I will be excoriated by the fellow PSU snobs. Try to keep in mind to budget a good PSU for reserve at some time in the future.

I am getting FX 6300 and Nvidia gtx 750 Ti, I don't overclock ever so I am looking for something below 500 Watts...

Although, ouch, yes, nobody wants to be trolled online, I hear you brother :p
