Intel 4770k vs 4790k

Hi Tom's Community,

I am looking at upgrading my cpu from a core i7 950. I am wondering what the difference between the Intel Core i7 4770k 3.5ghz and the i7 4790k 4ghz/4.4ghz? It will be mainly for gaming and I don't OC, but may in the future. The 4790k is currently $20 cheaper. It seems to be the way to go, but is there much difference in the cpus?

That MoBo is a Z97 too. Z97 is a MoBo chipset (not the LGA1150 CPU chipset) on which 4th gen and 5th gen Intel processors will fit. Z means OC-able and will be the choice for 'K' CPUs.

If the 4790K is $20 cheaper then go for it. They're pretty much the same CPU, except that it is said that the 4790K has better thermals. Also, the 4790K has a base clock of 4 GHz as you said.

Here's the first thing if you are a hardcore gamer or want an editor and want to process tongs faster. Then the i7-4790K is the way to go. But if it's beyond your price range, then get the i7-4770K. Don't forget that the i7-4790K is newer and uses Intel's Devil Canyon. :)

And if you heard the news when Devil Canyon's i7-4790K was released its possible to get a stable 5GHz. How cool is that! ;)

The 4790k is better, its a better OCer, has better base/ turbo clock, better thermals for faster dissipation of heat. Also, the 400MHz difference is enough for a typical gamer who doesn't wish to OC to go for 4790k, even if its a bit more expensvie. And since its $20 cheaper, no doubt it'll be my choice. Make sure to pair it with a good Z87/ 97 MoBo if you wish to OC in future.

Ok thanks. I was looking at the ASUS Maximus Hero VII, but is quite expensive. You think the Z97 will fullfill my needs? It's much more economical.

A Z97 is what is needed for overclocking, but if you are on a budget and want good overclocking, try Z97-A.

There's a Z87 too but that'd require an update and as your budget seems to accomodate high end MoBos, I'd really like to suggest ASROCK EXTREME 6 MoBo, which's an excellent OCer and full of features, besides being $40 cheaper than M7 Hero.

Yes M7 Hero is an incredibly good MoBo, but going to EX6 will in no way be a downgrade to your build, besides being more economical :)
