I bought a Dell GX520s with MS XP Pro, from a salvage company for $36. It had come from a large retail chain and is set up with the company's network complete with the Microsoft remote management, network logins, etc. I used my Hiren's Boot CD to break the local Administrator password so that I could gain local control but it still does not allow me access to a lot of the settings. I'd like to back it down to a stand-alone PC. I have the Dell XP Pro media and can just reload from scratch but that would wipe out the copy of MS Office that's loaded. I may just wipe Windows off and reload it with Mageia Linux but I'd like to play around with it before I do that. Yes, I know that XP is defunct. It's my PC now, I'm not trying to hack anyone else's computer.

One general suggestion I've received is to boot into safe mode, log in using the Administrator account and reset the privileges. I have not done that before and am not sure I can find all the bits and pieces. Can anyone provide a pointer to a way to accomplish my goal of backing the PC down to a stand-alone system and removing the customizations, preferably without removing MS Office? Thanks!

P.S. The local Administrator account is not a member of the administrators group and can't edit the accounts, etc.

P.P.S A friend suggested I try running gpedit.msc from the "run" window in Safe Mode. It did not work. I did not have permission to perform the action. Gpedit opened but with everything blanked out. I don't know of a tool on Hiren's disc that allows editing of the groups on the hard drive.

If you can't run gpedit to clean things out, just re-install Windows. You don't need MS Office, OpenOffice and others will do the same things for free.

Thanks. Yesterday I gave up messing with it and just reloaded XP.
I used a tool on Hiren's CD to reset all the permissions on all the files in the /Windows directory but there were still some files I could not access. The machine was well enough locked down to frustrate my feeble attempts. I figured that if I ever got access I'd leave the file system permissions so messed up that it would have no security at all.

As I said, I'll probably just reload it with Mageia Linux but I wanted to play around with it first.

Thanks again.
