What is causing this lag??

Computer specs:
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3
Processor - AMD FX 4100 Quad-Core Processor @3,6Ghz
RAM - Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 4GB
Graphics - Gainward GeForce GTX 770 2GB

Recently bought the GTX 770, and a little disappointed about the performance on some games like :
DayZ standalone (20-30fps) (I know it's poorly optimized, but i've seen people with about 60fps)
Heroes of Might and Magic VI (20-30 on low settings)

Some games are running great though like Wolfenstein - New Order, where I have the settings on absolute max and 60 fps.

Is it the processor that struggles with certain games?
It uses about 70-80% processing power while playing Heroes VI, shouldn't it be using maximum power if the processor is the bottle neck?

Thank you!

Solution
Yes a processor can still be the bottleneck at 70% usage, but in games like warcraft and DayZ an upgrade to an FX-6300 or FX-8350 may not help a huge amount as these games aren't multithreaded very well

Have all the latest Nvidia drivers, yes.
My graphics card is only using like 10% of it's memory, and pretty much the same with GPU clock.
The RAM on the other hand is peaking at 3.8 gb out of 4.0.
Processor is at about 80% when in a game like World of Warcraft.
Shouldnt they be at maximum power when im having frame rate issues?
Does the RAM make the computer lag when it's nearly at max usage?

Sorry about the late reply btw...

Actually, RAM at 3,5 out of 4
Processor : 60 - 70% max
GPU clock : 40%
GPU memory: 13%
World of Warcraft btw

Still the RAM is the bottleneck probably?
Is the processor also part of the fps problem here?

So I should probably just start with an extra 4GB of RAM and see what happens?
As for a new processor, I'm leaning towards intel, even though I would have to change out my motherboard.
Any thoughts on this? :p

yes yes yes, dayz LOVES intel and 8gb ram is the standard these days

an i5-4460 and a cheap H97 board would be sweet

Thanks alot for the quick replies!
I dont mind using some extra money to have a processor that doesn't bottleneck my GPU at all.
Do you think 4460 is still gonna be enough for pretty much every game thrown at it?
As for motherboards, I have no clue what to pick. I'm not an overclocker guy, I just want things to be stable at the stock speed and dont think i'll use SLI for the GPU. What should I look for in that case?

I've just ordered an extra 4gb of RAM, and if I still have some FPS problems I will probably take your advice and buy a new motherboard + processor.
Thanks a bunch!

Actually helped with the extra RAM, especially at DayZ which now uses 4,4GB (with some other stuff up aswell) and seems more stable.
Still not using the max potential of the graphics card I feel though, and probably need to switch out my processor for that.
About 40FPS on DayZ (out in the open, not a city) and not having the stable 60FPS on WoW while raiding.

If you have 40 fps in DayZ in the open, not in a city... This is not good... I have like 100 fps out in the open, but when I go to a city, I have like 10 fps and I don't know why (I do, my CPU bottlenecking my GPU). This is the main reason why your GPU doesn't work at the best potential that a 770 can be. Your CPU is actually bottlenecking your GPU.

I know, you had more fps in old games with your old GPU, and after upgrade, you couldn't play those games with better FPS. In my case, I had fewer FPS. The problem solved after I bought 4 more GB of ram, but resolved only for old games. This is how CPU bottlenecking works. If you don't have to spend too much money for buying an expensive CPU, you can buy a FX-6300 6-cores that can play in the same league with any i5's. I will buy this CPU too because it's cheaper with like $100 than the same performance that i5 haves.

To me it feels like my AMD processor has always fallen behind compared to the intel ones my friends have. And I dont really need 6cores, do I? Yet almost every AMD processor is 6core, and it probably comes at the expense of other features. Would rather not change out my entire motherboard, but I'm just a little sceptic about AMD tbh. Seems like LucoTF has some valid points about intel working better.
Any thoughts guys? ^^

And if you have a dual core with a lot of threads? Hyperthreading helps to handle background processes. The AMD Bulldozer CPU's are fails, I know, but 6300 is using Vishera, that is a huge difference. A lot games using multi-cores, like BF4, cod etc. The main reason that intel beats AMD is by rendering. Intel haves better performance per core, but in gaming you don't need more than a 6300 if you are a medium to high gamer. If you are a high end hardcore gamer you will buy an intel, but if you don't like to spend a lot of gold into a high end cpu, you can handle a game with solid 60+ fps with FX-6300, trust me.

Sorry for my bad english

I love the FX-6300, it's a solid performer for the price for sure. In BF4 it will definitely beat an i3 with ease.

Cravis, here's some benchmarks showing what FPS improvements you could expect if you kept your motherboard and upgraded to a 6300 or 8350:

Thanks for the benchmarks! So if I were to get an AMD processor, would I need the 9590 to not bottleneck my graphics card at all?
For the same price tag as the 9590, i'd get a 4690 intel, but of course the motherboard will cost 1/3 of the intel processor in addition.
Really not sure what to pick xD

9590 isn't supported by your mobo and it's overpriced anyway. Your best upgrades without changing mobo are a 6300 (6350) or an 8320 (8350). An FX-6300 would be the cheapest upgrade for you by far right now.

there will always be times where the CPU is the limiting factor, this is true for even the biggest builds out there. The fx-6350 would be a much better match for the gtx 770 than the fx-4100, that's for sure. One thing I will say is don't turn the settings down to low, ever. If CPu is bottlenecking then lowering settings doesn't help. You have a decent Graphics card, let it go to work.

My advice would be if you have the money then get an i5-4xxx and H97. If not, get an FX-63xx and a cheap cooler (e.g. the raijintek Themis) and overclock it. Both of these options would be an upgrade for you :)

It's worth noting that the FX-6300 was able to get 60fps in all the benchmarks I listed (although dragon age and shadow of mordor benchmarks were at 720p not 1080p) so it's clearly not a bad CPU at all. Yes, the i5 is better in all the same benchmarks but 60fps is all you need for a 60hz monitor anyway, right?
