I currently have two laptops i am trying to network via ethernet cable. One is windows 7 and the other is windows 8.1. I want a simple local access network so that i can easily move and borrow files and programs between computers while I am working.

Solution
If the laptops have 10/100/1000 network ports then a simple cable will work. You will have to go to the network adapter in each host and set a static IP address (different addresses on the two devices). Something LIKE 192.168.10.10 on one of them and 192.168.10.11 on the other. ANY number between 1 and 254 can be used for the last two octets. The first three numbers must be the same for the two devices.
