So I've been looking for upgrade graphics cards to play WoW amazingly. I was going to get the Geforce GTX 750 ti but it was not in stock at my local best buy, so i went with the best one that they had which was a Geforce GT 740, thinking that even though it is not a 750 it would still be good graphics. Long story short: i got home, installed it, opened up WoW, and the graphics are exactly the same as my old card. Maybe I can change some settings somewhere or something? Any help is greatly appreciated and hopefully I didn't just waste $120 on a noob buy! :??:

p.s. my old card was a Geforce GTX 550

More about : asap

Have you tried changing the graphics settings? Or reinstalling drivers?

I still only get like 50 fps on normal settings and when i switch to ultra my fps drops big time to like 20 something. i went into the nvidia control panel and changed a few things but nothing happened. Any idea if this card is even good or did i waste my money? i thought something was up whenever i opened the box to install it and the new card is half the size of my old one

I looked it up and it might be that the graphics card is about equal to a 550.

Holy Cow, $120 is a lot more than what you should pay for a 740. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... for $90 and it's not really worth it at that price. DO NOT BUY COMPONENTS AT BOX STORES. They are almost always very highly marked up and often sell old stuff at new prices.

The GTX 550 you had is actually FASTER than the 740. For WOW the 550 will run it at top settings just fine. Return the 740 if you can, sorry to say, but you spent money to make your computer slower or at best the same.

You won't get better graphics just by swapping a card, you may get a better frame rate but to change how the game looks you need to actually change the game video settings.

Plus how well the video card can work depends on the CPU and RAM as well, not to mention for online games the internet connection also has a part.

Hmm, I bought a GTX 750ti, deleted old drivers, installed it, downloaded newest drivers, and my picture and frame rate is exactly the same as when I had my 550 installed... Do I have to do anything specific to activate the thing or something? I realize it wouldn't be amazing until I get another CPU but man I thought it would atleast be a LITTLE better until then...

What are the frame rates with the 750Ti on Ultra in normal play in WOW? In a town or running around, not on a raid.

The 750Ti is an improvement over the GTX 550, but not a huge one. A game like WOW would be limited by the internet connection more than by the CPU and card you have. Where you would see an improvement is a graphics heavy game like Crysis.

You should not need an upgrade to the CPU to run WOW on Ultra, I can run it at Ultra with my Intel Q9650 CPU which is about the same speed as your AMD one and I have a slower video card. I just can't run it in raids on Ultra due to how the game is.
