The title says it all--- I want to use a XP laptop to stream music from a harddrive to my iPad. I plan on using the free app Tonido, so I have that side of the isue solved. I really just have a few general questions I'd rather figure out first than learn from experience. I'm a college student with a full load so I really don't have as much time to expiriment with this as I'd like.

1. I want to avoid any type of overheating/hardware damage. I plan to set a timer to shut the computer down at a certain time, and then use a bios startup event to have the computer turn on at a certain time. This is really just to give it a few hours of rest and cooling. Are there any other things I could do (removing CD optical drive, running a certain program, etc.) to keep the computer's overall heat minimized?

2. Can I do all of this with the lid of the laptop remaining closed? I figured no monitor would reduce further stress on the PC.

3. Could I potentially use this as a way to have a music library on my iPhone which has very limited HD space? Since I have an unlimited data plan I should always be able to access it, correct?

4. Any other tips to properly and easily run a server from home?

Solution
1) unless the laptop already has an overheating problem, using it as a file server is really not going to be hard on it and you could leave it running it 24/7 with out an issue.

2) Yes the screen can be closed, you will want to set the power settings to not go to sleep when the screen is closed or when it is idle. I also recomend you put the laptop at your router so that it can be wired as much as possible.

3) This depends entirely on your ISP and your internet connection, as well as your mobile internet conneciton. If you have 3+ mbps upload on your internet and have 4g service on your phone you should be able to do it with minimal skipping/buffering. In order to use this from outside your home you will need to use port...

In order to use this from outside your home you will need to use port forwarding on your router in order to direct the program to that compuer and unless you have a static IP you will need to setup a ddns service (most ISPs change your IP address every week or two so without a ddns service which monitors this change, you would have to manually check your IP address everyday before you left your house).
