Hello, I have a problem with my book, it won't recognize on my desktop. The lights go on and everything, it just won't work. I've tried different connectors and power cords, I even tried hooking it up to new computers. I also tried directly connecting to sata cables and still nothing.

details:
WD Book Essential hard drive (WDBAAF0010HBK-01)

Please help, thank you.

First of all, sorry for the late reply.
I would suggest you to check out the following two discussions from the Western Digital community:

Another thing is that this guy fzabkar, mentioned in the first link, has been really helpful when other people had similar issues. You can approach him through a PM and see if he can help you solve your problem.

Hope this will help,

Hi there Cael,

The WD Book Essential has hardware encryption, that is most probably why nothing happened when you tried to connect it directly to SATA. I would suggest you to try to put the drive back in the enclosure and try to connect it. You can also check out whether you see the device in BIOS/ Disk Management/ Device Manager. In case you do, I would say you first start with testing the drive with Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and see what the results show.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to help me out. :)

I put everything back together and hooked it up, but nothing comes up when I connect it via USB to my desktop. I checked "Disk Drives" in my Device Manager and I do not see it among the list. I have run the software given but the drive does not come up in the list.

(book powers on, led goes on, rumbles etc by the way)

EDIT

Okay...I think I found the issue. The USB connector broke off the little motherboard. As soon as I hooked it up to my SeaGate external power & USB box this appeared in my Computer Management area:

What does this mean?

EDIT 2

Okay, it is the Bridge. This I am certain. If I press the female USB connector, this thing (http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-mini-SMD-SMT-5-pin-Female-Mini-B-socket-5-Pcs-/121357436264?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c41778568), against the PCB, my computer instantly picks it up. I'm certain that I am not able to replace the Bridge/PCB because of the encryption, which I guess means I have lost all my data? Or can I buy replacement parts like this?

The number on the PCB is 4061-705059-REV and I found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/WD-4060-705059-001-Control-Board-support-Rev-A-AA-A1-AC-AF-P1-AG-WDBAAF0020HBK-/140867493119

Or is there a software I can use?
