so i recently bought a desktop computer rom craigslist, which works amazing, except that it only had integrated graphics on the motherboard so i couldnt play games.

i did my research and saw that the 750 ti was compatible with my computer so i bought one.

however, after i put it into my computer, disabled the integrated graphics, unplugged the vga cable to the monitor and connected the graphics card to the monitor with an hdmi cable, it still wont work!

i went into the bios and switched to pcie, which didnt help. i dont understand why it isnt working. please help

List the make/model of the components. CPU, Motherboard, Gfx card manufacturer, Power supply... I have a feeling your BIOS is too old to recognize the card.

cpu: amd athlon II x3 455
motherboard: gigabyte m68mt-s2p
gfx card : evga 750 ti ftw edition
power supply: 500w

also the bios version is award software international, inc. FB, 6/1/2011

If your motherboard is a Revision 3.1, there's a later BIOS that may fix it. No guarantees. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3922#bios
But only use that BIOS if that is indeed your board and your MB is rev. 3.1

Also check that your monitor doesn't need manual switching from VGA to HDMI. It may not be finding the digital signal... still looking for the analog signal.

Be sure you have the 6 pin PCIe power cable firmly plugged into the card. If this is your card, that model requires aux power.

What is the make/model of your 500W PSU?

Try going back to VGA (analog) with the provided DVI to VGA adapter and the VGA old cable. See if that works.

I never heard of that PSU. And I can't find any information about it. Does it look like this?

If you can see the nameplate on the side of the PSU, let me know the rating for the +12V rail. I'm looking for amps (A) and watts (W) for that rail alone.
Also, have you ever had a working gfx card in that slot to verify that the slot is functional?
Finally, do you have a friend that will allow you to try the card in his machine? You wouldn't have to install the driver or boot to Windows. Just see if it produces a display at boot.

yes thats exactly what the psu looks like. the rating or the +12v is 14a. this is my first pc and my first graphics card. i dont have any friends to test the graphics card on. does the spinning fans mean anything?

It might mean that the PSU can't maintain the +12V to start the card. The +12V rail runs almost all the heavy stuff on a PC.
If there is only one +12V rail and it is only rated at 14 amps, it is not designed to run a discrete gfx card of any significant power.

How did you manage to power the 6 pin header on the card? Did the PSU actually have a 6 pin connector laying unused?

I thought so. Another sign of a poor quality (so-called) 500W PSU; no 6 pin PCIe power cable. Did you use 2 Molex connections like the adapter suggested?

Until you get a better PSU, it is going to be difficult to troubleshoot. In fact, I'm leaning towards the low quality PSU being the issue.

Not 100% sure, because I'm not there to test it with another card... or test the card in another machine. You should try that to verify that the card works and that the PCIe X16 slot is OK. But the weak PSU would be my first assumption.

The fan spinning simply means it has enough juice to spin a tiny 1/4 amp fan motor. But may not have enough to start the higher amperage GPU.

yeah the psu being the problem does seem to make sense. i do know that the card works because the person who sold it to me said they tested it just before they shipped it and it worked.

can you link me some cheap psu's that will work for me? i think i may buy a new one. redoing all the cables and stuff will suck though, ive never even done that before. but its either the psu or the pcie slot. is there any way to test which one it is?
