Hi..I just bought an Intel Core 2 Duo 8600 to upgrade my old Intel Core 2 Duo E6550. Problem is , when I installed the E8600, my computer didn't boot up. So I put my old processor E6550, my computer worked fine. I went to a person who called himself an expert and he told me my motherboard and BIOS does not support the E8600. the first number on intel processors usually denote the generation, as you would think, the 8600 (Wolfdale) is a couple of generations newer than the 6550 (Conroe), if the 6550 is what came in the board, the chipset/bios very well may not support the 8600, sometimes a BIOS update may change support by a generation or maybe even 2, but that's not overly common. If your board has a high enough TDP, you could probably upgrade to a Core 2 Quad of the same generation, but again, that can be limited by BIOS support

Since it is an OEM Gateway motherboard, I would not put too much hope in updated BIOS enabling support for newer CPUs.

WOW Sir...Thanks for your experience!!! Is there any way you could suggest the fastest one I could use?? As far as the quad core I mean? I am a 60 year old on disability so I am home-bound. Learning these things has been quite a hobby for me , so thank you!!

I can't find much info on your motherboard, but it if it is a 95w board (which is sometimes printed on the board), it could probably use a Q6600 (the SLACR 95w version) or a Q6700.
