Ok, since i will be unemployed for probably (at least) a year, i thought i might as well do something with my spare time. I wanted to create a game that is kind of like DayZ but even more hardcore than it, like, fighting zombies, scraping for food and ammo, that kind of stuff. Basically I want to put The Walking Dead series into a game. So which engine would be the best for stuff like that? And preferably some that is somewhat popular, to have enough tutorials on youtube?

Are you an experienced C++ or Java programmer with a lot of knowledge of computer programming as well as 3D modeling? No "engine" can make a game of that complexity, you need a team and a lot of programming experience including arithmetic and efficiency logic and syntax. Nonetheless, good luck! :)

Oh, and Microsoft Game Studio is used for professional PC Games but is way too expensive, so look into Java instead probably.

Youtube is quite possibly the worst place to obtain programming knowledge. Avoid it like the plague. Reference books, technical manuals, and help sites such as Stack Overflow are your friends.

To answer your question, Unity3D seems to be reasonably popular for these kinds of games. Starforge and Rust are both based on Unity.

CryEngine is probably the best, but it requires quite a bit of work to get started with.

With that said, if you use Unity you'll need to know Javascript or C#.

As said by others, youtube is the worst place to learn programming. You cannot learn programming from a bunch of random videos.

If you're going to be unemployed for a year....why?...unless you are looking to get into professional game programming, why are you spending that time dicking around with a game engine?

Creating a game like "DayZ but even more hardcore than it" is tens of thousands of man hours. Not something a newbie does on his own in a few months.

I didn't want to watch programing tutorials on youtube, if i hadn't learned anything for the 4 years back in high school, i probably wouldn't from 15min youtube vids. I wanted to watch engine tutorials.
Anyway, as i said, i have experience with cryengine, i already know about 5-10% (considering i forgot a lot over the past 2-3 years) knowledge about it, so should i go with that?
