Alright, so I dont know where else to post this. This morning when I turned my PC on after doing updates the previous night, the mouse and keyboard no longer seem to function. They work in the bios and the WinRE but not on the login.

What I have done to fix this;

  • ■ Change USB Ports
    ■ Use a different keyboard/mouse
    ■ Uses the system restore before the update
    ■ Tried sfc /scannow

Nothing seemed to work. The same thing happened a few weeks ago, and I did a restore on the updates and it worked, now, nothing.

Anyone have solutions?

Solution
Have you tried to do a repair using the windows installation disk. If you boot to the installation disk and choose the repair feature it may get you where you need to be. If not, you may need to do a refresh.
Boot into safe mode which should allow you to use the mouse and keyboard using basic drivers, go into device manager in the control panel, not devices and printers but device manager, open the mouse and keyboard categories. Uninstall the keyboard first by right clicking on it and selecting uninstall. Make sure to check the box that says uninstall drivers as well. Then reboot and see if you have keyboard function. If so, do the same procedure for the mouse using the keyboard to navigate.

Or, if you give me the brand and model number of your computer I'll find the most current OEM drivers for you. It may be that windows update installed incompatible mouse, keyboard or usb drivers. You might even just try booting windows in safe mode with networking enabled and then in device manager see if any hardware has an exclamation or question mark next to it. If so, right click on it and select update drivers. If there is not you can try to update drivers the same way with right click, update, update automatically for the mouse, keyboard or usb controllers. If none of that works we might need to reinstall the OEM drivers but I'll need the exact model of your unit.

Also, if this is any help at all, I have setup my computers on a network, meaning I can browse all files on the computer from my laptop. Unfortunately, I did not enable remote desktop, so I cannot control my computer remotely.

After spending hours and hours trying to fix it, including remotely editing the registry hives to enable remote desktop to edit the drivers, as well as using a live cd to try and fix the drivers buried into the hard drive....i gave up and simply refreshed.

Thanks for your help though Darkbreeze!

Well, sorry you had to do that. In the future I suggest you get a backup program and use it. I use Acronis True Image and I create a full disk image twice a week. That way if I ever have a problem of any kind I'll never lose more than a couple days worth of changes. When I do a clean install and get all my programs I want to use installed I make a disk image at that time.

I then make another after all windows updates are complete at which time I delete the initial image if everything seems ok after a day of using it. Then after I make two additional images during the following week I delete the second oldest image I have every time I make a new image backup so I don't fill my external backup drive over time.(I don't delete the very first image I made after the clean install and program installations. That always stays in case I want to go back to the beginning again.)

In this way I can always return to one of two images from the past week, or the original image from the clean install. I never worry about something happening. Plus, Acronis comes with the feature to create a repair disk that you can boot from to initiate the restoration of your backup image so it doesn't matter if windows is 100% corrupted, it won't stop you from having it back to normal within about twenty minutes.
