repeated BSODs after upgrades

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire V3 772G laptop, running windows 8.

I've been experiencing frequent BSODs after installing a Samsung EVO 256gb SSD, upgrading from 8 to 16gb RAM, and doing a clean reinstall of the os.

My current RAM setup is one Kingston 8gB PC3L-12800 dimm, and two Kingston 4gB PC3L-12800 dimms. The 4gb dimms are what originally came with my laptop and the 8gb was installed shortly before the SSD was. Prior to yesterday, I was using an PNY 8gb PC3-12800 dimm, but I replaced it with the original 4gb dimms because the PNY wasn't low voltage, which I thought could be one of the reasons for the crashes. Unfortunately I seem to be experiencing crashes a little more frequently after the switch than I was before, though I can't tell for certain if that is the case or if the switch is the cause.

I'm not entirely sure of everything I need to present here, but here is a screen cap of what BlueScreenView sees:

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/825x464q90/r/538/4IyxMT.jpg

To add a little more context, the crashes only happen when I'm running my music production software, specifically when I'm working on a certain extra large, resource hogging project.

Additionally, whenever this project is open, my monitor is liable to randomly black out for 30 seconds or more, and when the visuals return again, all of my applications begin failing to respond. The already open programs are sort of responsive, but I wont be able to initialize any other program or open any other window, ultimately forcing me to force-restart. The laptop restarts so fast that I've just been trying to roll with the punches, but this is getting really annoying and seems to recur more and more as the project increases in size.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

are you certain you have all the drivers updated and current? i would go to the laptop's home page, download every single current driver available and try installing them... there are parts of your computer which don't show up in the device manager until you install the hardware for it.

I suppose I'll give that a try. I haven't up to this point because the laptop is only 6 months old and was working perfectly prior to the upgrades, but it's certainly worth a shot. Thanks

Have you verified that the So dimm memory modules are compatible from the support page for the laptop, there will be a list of tested memory So dimm modules.

You also need to be aware of the type of existing memory the system was fitted with.
Some laptops come with EEC based modules, and if you mix a non EEC module that is only buffered or un buffered it can cause problems when run aside with a EEC type enabled memory stick, or sticks causing a crash.

Look on the old memory at the speed, timing values and the voltage and if it states EEC.
Then look at the other stick to see if it matches in Speed timing values and voltage.
The cause may be a mix of ram types EEC enabled memory and running a Buffered/ un buffered memory module with no EEC feature.

If one stick and its setting is higher in latecny or timing values, depending on the bios of the laptop.
Set the latency or timing values to that stick in the bios for all of the memory.
save the settings and exit the bios.
Test it to see if it crashes. With both
Can I also make a note that if the laptop has four slots for memory, by putting a third module in the laptop will be forced to use single channel memory mode, were as with two in it will, or should use dual channel memory mode.
This can also cause a conflict with some memory controllers of laptops or motherboards.
So a setting of Single channel mode should be checked in the bios. with three sticks of memory fitted.
If set to dual it will also cause crashing. because three sticks should be single channel memory mode.

One stick single ch mode.
Two sticks dual ch mode
Three single ch mode.
Four dual ch mode.
Detected or set in the bios.
Wrong setting and it will bork or fall over in windows.

I'm fairly certain that the sticks are compatible, though admittedly, I basically only took a google crash course on the subject of dimms so I could figure out which type would be right for my computer. In any case, heres an hwinfo screencap that shows the RAM specs. I don't know if that answers everything, but the specs were identical for all three sticks.

I have also reinstalled all of my drivers, but unfortunately I had another blue screen just a few minutes ago, right before I looked up the ram specs, actually. It should be noted that I had that big music project loaded in the background when it happened. I'm loading it again, and if I get another bsod, I'll be sure that reinstalling the drivers didn't solve the problem.

There was something different about this bsod, though. I got this message for the first time:

"System Thread Exception Not Handled. (Nvlddmkm.sys)"

If I'm correct that is the NVIDIA graphics driver I just installed.

^ Took the 8gb stick out, started reloading the project.... and then went to go make a burger.... I came back to check on the project, only to see the laptop at the sign in screen again, followed by the usual post-crash "send details" dialogue. Looks like this time the laptop didn't even wait for the project to finish loading before the bsod occurred.

Checked blue screen viewer and it was the same "System Thread Exception Not Handled. (Nvlddmkm.sys)" crash.

On one hand, I'm relieved to know that it wasn't the 8gb stick causing the issue because I've already jumped through enough hoops figuring out my RAM setup.

On the other hand.... the issue is still unsolved :/

.............................and the laptop crashed again as I typed this reply.

I tired to load the project once again, and the laptop crashed once again before it even finished loading. The only difference this time is that there was no blue screen. The screen just blacked out for about 10-15 seconds, then it restarted and showed the "send details" dialogue again at start up. It was the NVIDIA driver again according to the dump file. I assume that's what happened during the last crash too.

Could it be that the project is just too resource intensive for the laptop to handle?

yep, that error is 100% an nvidia driver error.

Try reinstalling your nvidia graphics driver (first uninstall anything nvidia in your program list, then download the most recent driver, then reboot your pc, and then install the driver)... if that doesn't work try downgrading your nvidia driver to an older version (or newer if you don't have the most recent driver). make sure you uninstall everything prior to doing this.

You might need to roll the nvidia driver back a bit if you're still having issues after trying the above suggestions. Up until WHQL 314.22, nvidia drivers were some of the best video card drivers ever released. But after that release they got very buggy...

^ I uninstalled the nvidia driver as you said, and then installed the latest available version....

I've noticed that while I haven't had a blue screen error since late last night, the computer still crashes eventually after loading the music project. The only difference now is that the screen just blacks out and restarts instead of blue screening. Here are the dump files for the last 2 crashes:

First ran the chkdsk /f C: command, and restarted. I saw the "to skip disk check message press any key within 1 second" message at the splash screen, but that was it. I suppose the check was just really fast because the sign-in screen was loaded almost instantly after the skip message showed up.

I went back and ran a regular disk check, just to make sure, and no errors were found.

I just finished a Malwarebytes scan and the only thing it found was a PUP, specifically a Yontoo Firefox extension.

While on the subject of scans, windows defender did flag and quarantine a file about a week ago, win32/trafog!rts. I've since disabled defender's real time protection option, as I've heard that malware remover conflicts often cause Bsods, but clearly that didn't solve anything.

I just checked windows update and there were 100+ important updates available. I'm gonna go ahead and download all of the updates to see if that fixes anything.

Well, I installed all of the updates, but still no dice unfortunately... just another black screen restart.

This time the culprit was a bluetooth driver...

In my production software (FL Studio 11 64-bit), I notice that once the project surpasses the maximum RAM meter reading of 9999mb, that is typically when the crash occurs. Don't know if that is helpful or not, but I figured I'd throw that tidbit in the discussion.

Haven't really solved the crash issue, but I think I figured out how to avoid it.

FL Studio has a bridging option that provides the plugins I use within the project with their own processes independent of the program. This frees FL studio from the RAM load that those plugins carry, preventing it from maxing out at the 9999mb mark with it's own RAM usage. I've had the project open in the background for hours now and I haven't had a crash. It seems that as long as I don't max out the RAM meter within FL, I'll be ok.
