Hey all, i just built my first computer today! very excited (and it booted on the first try too!) I don't know very much at all, so please excuse my ignorance

MOBO: Asus Z97-A
CPU: Intel i5 4690K with stock cooling, not overclocked.
GPU: EVGA GTX760 2G
RAM: 8gigs crucial Balistix
PSU: Corsair CT500W

Everything seems to be working, not sure about optimizing my RAM, but that's another question. What got me on here is that my CPU seems to be running a bit hot.

40 degrees in bios and idling, but goes up to 50 or 60 when in a basic game (world of warcraft)
I did a quick Prime95 with default settings and it was touching 80 by ten minutes in so i stopped the test.

Now, this Intel CPU has these quick-install screws for the factory heatsink/fan and i'm paranoid that it's not in right (was wiggling a bit at first, but i pulled it out and replaced it and it seems secure now)

the thermal compound that came with it was already applied and sorta looked iffy when I pulled the Heatsink off to reaffix it. Doesn't seem that well spread out, but it's supposed to be idiot proof i think. See the pic below

Is prime95 supposed to stress my system this much?
Should i go find a razor and try to apply the thermal compound more evenly?
Is there a chance that my CPU heatsink isn't on right? All the screwpops are expanded on the back of the mobo.
what other diagnostics could i run in order to give you folks more info?

the intel cpu cooler great for non gaming rig but is under sized and cheap for a gaming rig. for the money by a tube of thermal paste and the evo 212 cooler. it a larger air cooler but it works. used one on a friends build this month and it keeps his chip cool under load.

If you cant get money for both Thermal paste & the CPU cooler (I wonder why) just buy the Cooler master 212 evo alone because it comes with it's own thermal paste.

REMINDER: Do this if you cant afford both.

Ya, i think i'll just need to pick up an aftermarket cooler. I didn't realize that non-graphic intensive gaming would stress the stock cooler so much :p

I'll grab the 212 and...what's a reputable brand of compound?

Is it safe to run the CPU at these numbers until the cooler arrives?

Here are some points to consider:

Prime95 stress tests your system by putting 100% load on CPU, and even if its not OCed (or even turbo), it does result in fairly high temps with stock coolers.

Stock coolers are decent for everyday tasks and some games but not the way to go for serious gaming and OCing.

By the pic I can see the paste isn't evenly applied. Re apply it evenly to get something like this:

Also, after installing the heatsink check horizontally if its actually making contact with the chip or not.

The non OCed CPU should idle in 30-40C and medium-high gaming at around 60C. Very heavy gaming or heavy rendering can push it to late 60s and early 70s but 80C is just too hot.

You might want to get an af cooler like CM 212 EVO to lower the above mentioned temps by 4-7C.

I'll grab some compound tomorrow and order a better cooler as well. Since i'm getting one, I don't mind spending a little bit more if it will make a difference, is there a good aftermarket cooler more in the $50ish range that you ladies and gents could recommend?

The cooler master hyper 212 evo is around 20-30 USD

I should have specified, I meant is there a heatsink that's say, one spot up from the evo 212. Since i'm taking the time to get the part i don't mind spending closer to $50 than $30.

Although the EVO is in no way a weak cooler, but if you're willing to strech up in the $50 range, I'd recommend the Phanteks. They're great coolers, better than EVO. A good one for the price would be PH-TC12:

Or you can go all pro in air cooling with the TC14 from Phanteks or Noctua D14, both are excellent coolers for the price and you won't expect anything better in air cooling (except D15, the champ):

Phanteks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
D14: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

The biggie (in the $100 range) D15: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

For your range the TC12 would be an awesome pick :)
