Hi all, I just built an amateurish desktop recently and I am beginning to ponder if I am undermining its potential. Not a fan of overclocking and overheating here.

Question is, what could I have built instead given the same overall budget?

Here are my current specifications:
MSi H97 Gaming 3 (done on purpose to lock CPU overclocking)
i7-4790k
Seasonic G-series 750W
MSi GTX750Ti TF
Kingston 2x4Gb (1333Mhz)
All encased in Corsair 200R

EDIT: budgeted at USD 1150

You forgot to say the budget.

The issue is that you've got a top tier (gaming) CPU and entry level GPU. You probably would have been better off going the other way around, for now at least. The good news is that your base CPU & Mobo should be good for a number of years and will almost certainly be compatible with graphics cards for a long time. So although you haven't got yourself the best gaming machine now, when you want more performance all you need to do is save up and drop in a new video card. That'll take you to a really solid gaming machine. If you went lower-tier CPU but high tier GPU, you would have gotten better performance right now, but would have had to shell out a lot more money come upgrade time.

what would be a good graphics card at USD350 and below? does having SLI help with performance?

If you can spare an extra $15 over budget you could get an R9 290 windforce too. Should be around 30% faster than a GTX 770.

GPUboss isn't really great. It rated both the cards the same ... Compare the actual performances :p

ok so R9-290 and GTX770, i will keep a lookout!

next thing i would really love to know would be the boost in performance by using SLI. better in the sense of speed and quality?

YEs it will give you more performance, but with lower end cards it is not worth the trouble. Just get a single better card.

I would DEFINITELY get a 290 over a 770. And yes, in some places it is certainly 30% better.

Also, well known fact around here that GPUboss and CPUboss are crap.
