New i7 4970K Overheating?

I recently bought a new computer for gaming which I had one of my friends build for me on Friday, he has built computers before. I am concerned that my i7 4970K appears to be overheating when playing games especially and my computer has shot down due to heat 4 times since Friday. I have quickly print screened the temperature of my CPU whilst playing Skyrim on Ultra and Dota2 on the highest settings.

MY PC specs are:
CPU:i7 4790K(stock cooler)
Motherboard:Z 97-A
GPU:Zotac 780 Ti Nvidia
RAM:8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Pro Series Red ( I think the RAM has automatically been underclocked which I need to look into later
PSU:Corsair RM Series 750W
Case:NZXT Phantom 530 (Only two fans)

I Think with my small PC hardware knowledge I can see 3 possibilities here
1. The stock CPU cooler is really bad (which I know it is anyway) and should be changed.
2. Friend touched top of CPU and CPU should be cleaned with 95% Alcohol and then thermal paste reapplied.
3. I have unrealistic expectations for the temps of my CPU

If there is something wrong with the CPU and it is broke or something it should still be covered under scansure warranty and I can exchange it as long as I do it within 3 weeks of now. I will do my best to provide you with information if you ask for it but I am going on holiday on Friday and can't answer again until Friday(unless it doesn't require doing something to the computer.).

yes its high but not dangerous .......you have an unlocked cpu so pls get an after market cooler it will help in maintaining the cpu temperature at load plus you can do some decent OC.
if u have a budget than go with coolermaster hyper 212 evo around 30 $ or for a good OC noctua d15 for around 100$ you can also go for a h100 which is a liquid cooler for heavy OC.

Those temps are reasonable temps imo. Haswell refresh, while improving the Thermal Interface material or TIM, are going to get hot. The i7 4790K is by default 4.0-4.4Ghz with. Considering that Most i7 4790k SKUs will on average hit 4.7GHz on high priced Air Cooler or AIO Water Cooling setup.
Also the Stock intel HS/F has decent thermal paste and Since most will out right replace the Cooler with something more beefy it is fine to leave it on.

I have never used a water cooler in a computer before, but I have been very interested recentley in getting the H100i. Is there any real risk of the closed circuit coolers leaking and will i need to replace the coolant inside of it. I do a lot of travelling to LAN parties with the computer so if it would travel well with water cooling then it would not be very good for me.

From what I have learn in the forum there is a risk but it is only 1%. The chances of having a good CPU cooler is 99%. Most of my friends who are gamers and heavy clockers uses the H100i and have not regret. Don't forget this isn't not a water cooling system which is risky but this is a CPU water cooler which is easy to install and not too hard.

But if you do LAN parties, then go with an air cooler.

The board is an Asus?, because sometimes the Boards use very high values for the Cpu core voltage, sometimes even on the limit of the processors to give them more stability in the case of overcloking in spite of them running at stock clock.

I the RAM was underclocked i would bet that the person that mount the Pc didnt change any setting.

You are over the max Tcase is 72.72º but you are monitoring Tjunction, not Tcase (Tcase is allways lower than Tjuntion), it's a bit high? yes, but it's still within working parameters.

Take into account that you are using a hot card (780) with a model that exaust the hot air into the case and a case with only two fans (only one exausting heat) and a stock cooler that didnt create exaust airflow neither.

The first steps i would take are:
- Check that the CPU is using the lowest posible voltage that makes it stable at stock speed.
- Change the front 200m fan to the top exausting to have 1xback 140mmm and 1x top 200mm exausting heat.

If that didn't work then you could see to change thermal comp at Cpu, another case fan or a non-stock cooler.
