Please recommend some quality PSUs for around AUD $150 - $170
Here are my specs:

Intel i5 4690 (3.5 GHz)
Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X Overclocked
ASRock Fatal1ty B85 Killer Motherboard
Antec HGX500B-W Dominator ATX Case.
G.Skill Ripjaws Sereies 8GB (2x4) DDR3 1600 Clock
SeaGate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM Internal HDD
Samsung 24X SATA DVD Burner
LG 24EN43VS-B 23.6inch LED Monitor
Windows 8.1 OEM (64-bit)
Thermaltake Pure 12 Fan, 120mm, Black (x2)

Note that the 290x does require a 750w PSU at MINIMUM, so it was the best choice for aiming at a higher unit.

Both of the PSUs are 750w... is it really okay to have 750w when the min is 750w?

A 290X doesn't require a 750W, it is stated as 750W as the manufacturer can't determine what everybody specs are. So they play it safe and say 750W. However a 600W is more than enough for what you need. I recommended the 750W because of future upgrading or expansions.

I agree with MeteorsRaining, an 800w is massive overkill. Take, for instance, the Anand Test bench machine that tested both the 290 and 290x here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1068?vs=1056

If you notice the peak consumption was 395 watts? That's also measured from the wall, which assuming their PSU was 90% efficient means that it was supplying under 360 watts to the machine. Add in a little breathing room and say if you could find a supply that can easily supply 400 watts of nice clean power you'd likely see that run for many years to come. Add in some head room so that you are in the efficiency sweet spot of about 60% capacity then you'd be looking at something near a 600 - 650 watt supply.

The reason they have to put the 750 watt minimum on the requirement sheet is because some fool is going to spend 20 bucks on a '700 watt super ultra mega' power supply and when they try to run 350-400 watts on it the PSU will melt or damage their equipment and then try to blame AMD for saying 700 watt or 600 watt would run their gear instead of blaming the PSU manufacturer for making garbage, or themselves for buying cheap junk.

I see, its quite funny ...
oh and do you think the 290x is a good choice for a good performance gpu.. or does it have a downside?
sorry, its just that im new to building
and thank you for the info

Yes R9 290X is an awesome pick. It's competitor, the GTX 780 Ti, is around $100 costlier. Also, the only downside of AMD is its power consumption, it draws power like a monster. If you're ok with that, then the R9 290X is unbeatable in performance/ price ratio. It runs a bit hot but the Sapphire/ Asus/ MSI/ XFX have alot better temps and would be a fine purchase overall over the GTX 780 Ti :)

If you can afford it a 780ti would be better but 290x is okay too
