AMD FX-9590 Underclock

Hello,

Recently my friend has asked me to install a new and powerful processor. I chose the fx-9590 since he already had an am3+ mobo. I made a huuuugeee mistake here. I didn't think about the power consumption of this cpu. The 220 watt tdp is insane. His motherboard only supports 140 watt cpu's (Asrock 970 Extreme3).

Here are a few observations I made:
Performance (in games) is fine for a while, untill the cpu temperature hits 52°C.
After this threshold is hit, the cpu throttles it's frequency down from 4.7Ghz, to about 1.3Ghz. (which results in bad game performance)
Because of this change, the cpu temperature falls into the 20's °C.
It then clocks it's frequency back to 4.7Ghz and this whole cycle continues.

So there might be a cooling problem here? Or is it really necessary to buy a motherboard that can handle this tdp?

I have tried underclocking the cpu but since I don't have a lot of experience with it, I can't get it stable. The pc usually bsod's after a few minutes of usage.

Thanks in advance.

The VRMs on the motherboard are simply inadequate for such a cpu. In the future you should check the motherboards support site for a list of compatible processors before purchasing. The 970 extreme 3 doesn't even support the FX 8350.

You could try to disable a couple cores and downclock in the bios, but really the best fix would be a motherboard that supports that cpu...

Is there any way to fix this throttling issue without buying a new motherboard? Or at least a temporary fix?
And what you're saying isn't really necessarily true, the asrock extreme 3 Fx990 also only supports up to 140 watt

You are right, my mistake, I meant the extreme 9 supports the 9590 & it has 12+2 Power Phase.I suppose you could underclock the chip with the current board, but it defeats the purpose of having the 9590 in the first place.

So I took a look at that last link you send me. And it seems like the Asus Sabertooth 990FX r2.0 will run this cpu, am I right? Because when I searched for specifications it seems it also only has a maximum cpu TDP of 140 watt.
I'm considering buying it since I can get it by tomorrow.

Your choices for the 9590:

ASRock 990FX Extreme9
Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z
Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7
MSI 990FXA-GD80V2

Warning: This power draw of this CPU is almost twice that of the average CPU. Due to this, AMD recommends using at minimum a 1000W power supply. For cooling, AMD recommends using either either closed loop liquid cooling or full system liquid cooling.

One last question, right now I'm using a Scythe Mugen 4 which I had lying around to cool the cpu. Is this sufficient, or will I have to swap this out for a liquid cooling solution or a more powerful air cooler? (Only if it's really necessary)
