Hey guys, so I just finished putting together my first pc build and everything looks good. I got all new parts like mobo, CPU, PSU, Graphics Card, and Ram but i kept my dvd drive and my hard drive from my previous computer which is like a year old. Now I know after a new setup with new motherboard and cpu that i had to reinstall windows. Stupid me is so excited, and partly just wanting to know if i connected anything wrong, I went and plugged it in and turned it on. It turns on and everything seems to be working except it says new motherboard and cpu detected need to run setup. I put the Motherboard cd in and try to run setup but of course that didn't work. Now the system keeps restarting when it gets to the windows logo.

Would I be able to download windows from microsoft using the product key that i have from my previous computer or do I have to purchase another one and do a clean installation on the hard drive?

I do have a product key, but i don't have a physical cd for windows. My copy of windows is a digital copy already saved on the hard drive for recovery purposes.

Thank you guys in advance

If you have Windows 7, most likely the serial number for it is connected to your old motherboard, so the only way to recover it would be to try and contact Microsoft support.
This should not be a problem with Win 8/8.1.

Use this link to download a legal copy of your Windows of choice, and use the serial you have, or purchase a new one depending on the case:

Hi,

Have you got windows disc to reload O.S.? as it sound like drivers from old mobo. on you old pc if it was brought from a store you should have been given a product key to validate your O.S. and a windows disc? if so just reload your O.S. and type the key in and when you connect to to internet it should connected to microsoft and validate the install, if there`s a problem it will tell you to contact microsoft and you can speak to a operator and if you tell them you have upgraded parts they will give you a new code to input
