My parent's PC will not stay turned on. It just goes completely off as if someone cut power to it. I just switched out the psu thinking that that was the problem, but when I started working on it, it turned off. I have to wait several hours to be able to turn it back on because if I try again after it turns off, it will turn off before Windows loads. I turned it on again and tried running malware bytes, it found 81 things by about a third of the way through the scan and then turned off. I can try and give you what ever logs you might need when the pc turns back on.

I tested the other psu all night at a different spot in the house using a different TV, outlet, and no Internet connection. I had the pc back in its normal spot for 5 minutes when it turned off. Thanks

Solution
My guess is an overheating issue. Most PC components will shutoff to prevent damage.
Check all fans, processor, case, and video card fans. make sure its running cool.
Check the heatsink and fan is seated properly.
Get this to monitor temps: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php (click the "speedfan 4.50" blue link)
Hope this helps. Also make sure the Power supply is able to handle all the components at full load, if it's maxing out it'll shut off also.

If its new and has always had this problem it is likely ram or the hard drive. Run memtest and if it crashes in the middle of its the memory is bad. I just had some issue with this on my ram. Good luck to you and i hope u can get your parents computer working

I have used core temp to monitor cpu temp and my cpu doesn't go above 38 c and I used ccc to monitor gpu temp and they are stable in the 30's as well. And I don't really have a way to format the drive since the pc doesn't stay on long enough to download anything.

Don't have any OS lying around there? ask for a borrowed one? (we all know it's "illegal"....but cut him some slack he can't even power up his PC) there are always means to get an OS if you don't have one....or don't want to buy one....:p

I reinstalled the OS, switched out the psu and put a different heat sink on cpu. Individually, none of them worked, but all together it's magically working now. Thanks for the input
