I recently got a new desktop with windows 8.1 pro, but it seems to think it's a tablet. I'm not getting the drop down style context menus on start, modern apps aren't showing up on the taskbar, I can't get to the universal taskbar by moving my mouse to the edge of modern apps, etc.

So my question is, how can I manually tell my OS to switch to desktop mode? Thanks for any help.

So i am guessing you have it to boot from the desktop selected in your settings. So I would say that you have a corrupt version of windows as the other laptop is set up the same way in which case you can try and repair it with the cd it came with if it did or try to refresh your pc which may fix the error. Or try a factory reset and see if it still happens. If it does then try to get another cd and try again.

I have no idea how or why, but I turned my computer on today and the power/search buttons have appeared on start along with all the other desktop settings. Maybe the NSA saw my post and decided to help me out. In any case thanks for the replies.
