Switching from a I5 to I7 worth it?

Alright I have a quick question for you guys. Currently I'm running a I5 4670K with a NZXT X61 liquid cooler on a Asus Z97-A. I'm doing a little bit more CPU intensive things on my computer now(work related) + gaming. I will be overclocking.

If I'm switching it would be to the I7 4790k. Is it worth making that jump?

Solution
right now the best advice is to wait until the new batch of CPUs, motherboards and DDR4 memory is released and price/performance can be evaluated. Two weeks one way or the other win't kill you.
If your current CPU maxes out, then yes, it may be worth it. Or you could hang in there for a short while longer and see what comes out in the next series of Intel announcements (I believe Sept. 18th).

You may well need to move to a Xeon-type processor since there are a few in there that exceeds gaming PCs for about the same price or a little less.

if money is not an issue and you are maxing out your CPU then yes it can be worth it.

the justification would be if you can save an hour a week just from improved CPU efficiency then it would pay for itself.

personally I do not think it will be worth it. I am on an 15 2500k that is pegged at 4.8. I need more CPU power for the 1440p and CF 7950's but i am holding out for the first Intel 8 cores that are reasonable to come out.

I will more than likely max it out. I'm guessing that the difference in the 4690K and the 4670K is minimal correct? Any suggestions on a Xeon?

fkr- Are you talking about the Haswell-E's that are coming out today?

Well the only thing is jumping to that chipset is a little pricey right now. Especially with the new processors plus the X99 and the DDR4 memory.

I think your right. I'll probably end up going with the 5820K when the dust settles.

every generation gives around a 10% improvement.

this is what i am waiting for and I hope the next iteration will come down in price

octa core finally^^

The last semi-pro workstation I built for a developer was with the i7-4820K late last year. I was already reluctant then, but the guy was hurting on an old Nehalem platform so he wanted something in the 2013 tax year.

Once you get over the hump of paying for the LGA 2011-3 motherboard, then that's certainly a place to be, although Anandtech already has a rather nice higher-end configuration outlined.

The price is ballpark the same as what we spent in December 2013, but this is an 8-core and will perform substantially better, I think.
