problem is, we don't know what the 900 series will bring. We don't even know what the 800 series is so don't suspect anything for the 900 series.

At this point just wait. I don't think it really hurts to wait for another 2 or 3 weeks. Also it is possible for nvidia to further drop the price of current 700 series when nvidia officially unveil their next series card.

I'm in the same boat as OP (except that I'm looking at GTX 770 instead), how long does it typically take for NVIDIA to drop their prices when a new series arrives?

I'm a bit hesitant to play the waiting game as I live in India so I'll have to wait for the local retailers to play catch up if/when their global counterparts slash the prices. I realize the sensible thing to do is to probably wait for a month or so but I'm sooo eager to get my hands on a new card I might bite the bullet and buy the 770 at the current price (it's $450 here after taxes, import duty, etc)

Wait for the 900 series. After a few months, there will be price drops, then buy the GTX 780. It will be cheaper in the future than the price today..

What are you guys talking about 900 series? The 800 series aren't even out yet and we still have no idea when they'll be out. If you're going to do the waiting game, you're going to miss out on the opportunities to have those wonderful cards.

latest rumor (and it comes from quite reputable leaker) says that nvidia will skip 800 suffix and will go straight to 900. it happen in the past so it is not that weird if nvidia decides to do that again

that price drops is only possibility. because usually instead of dropping the price nvidia will EOL the card much earlier so when they are close to launch new series of card the older card price did not drop much and nvidia doesn't have to officially drop the price like AMD did.

For those who don't know, and their seems to be a couple of you, Nvidia is not releasing a new "GTX 800" series, as they have already got a "GTX 800M" series on the market which are a line of GPU's specifically designed to be used in laptops and netbooks. Therefore, to avoid any confusion between the 800 and 800m series, they decided to just skip the 800, and jump straight to the 900 series. We should be hearing about the specifics of the 900 series within the next 10 weeks, and hopefully we will see their release before November (supposedly when GTA 5 for PC is released, along with some other great looking games).

I myself am looking to buy a GTX 780, but will wait until the 900 series is released and the prices drop. I will not be tempted by the 900 series, as the price will just be ridiculous for the first few months, and simply not worth it. A GTX 780 should see me through for at least 5 years. To anyone else who is on the fence, if money is no object to you, then just get 4 GTX Titan Z's. If money is an issue, don't bother with the 900 series, they will probably be around $1000 dollars upon the release, compared to the $350 dollars that the GTX 780 will be. The difference between them is not worth $650, you might as well just get 2 GTX 780/Ti's in SLI mode!

Hope this helps guys!

Thanks for the neat summary, any idea how soon we can expect prices to fall in the 700 series once 900 is out? I haven't been following price movements in GPUs for several years now so I'm unsure as to how long I'll have to wait if I decide to put off my GPU upgrade for now (going from GTX 460 to GTX 770 here).

Just wait until the rumored GTX 980 is released. From various sources, it's said it launch at $500 and will be more powerful than the GTX 780Ti.

My best advice is to just wait. I would expect to see them drop some time in early October, but I'm not 100% sure about that, it's just a logical estimate. I would just wait and see, it will be worth it. Right now is the worst time to buy a graphics card, just wait.

Thanks, I think I'm finally convinced that I do need to wait for a while :)  My current card does get the job done for all my purposes, albeit with some effort.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works here but:

I was in this situation at the start of the year, doing a full system build and was putting it off and off waiting for the next best thing to be released (my goal was a build that would last and was lucky to be able to throw a decent ammount of money at it)

Eventually i thought funk it - i'm going to be here for ever waiting as thanks to moores law new/better gear is released all the time.

That being said - if you're set on a specific GPU then ignore everything i've said haha, just thought i'd share my 2p
