i have been forced to say good bye to my radeon 7870. i would like to buy a new graphics card for my pc i am open minded to both nvidia and amd. i will be using it for mostly gaming (e.g battlefield pay day 2 euro trucker minecraft) and watching video and movies in HD. i have £165 pounds to spend and i will be purchasing it from amazon. if you could advise me on the best graphics card to get for my pc would be help full.
Pc details - msi z87 gd65 gaming motherboard, intel i7 4770k, evga super nova 650 watt, 32gb corsair 1866mhz ram.

The R9 280 or GTX 760/770 should be plausible to purchase for your budget.

The R9 280 will probably be still faster by a couple of fps. Why not get this so incase you want to overclock you can go further than the R9 270X.
The Toxic on the R9 270X is way overkill while the Vapor-X cooler is decent enough. It more of an aesthetic card for people wanting the Toxic cooler on a R9 270X.

the clock speed on the r9 280 card is lower than the toxic and the pixie rate is higher on the toxic

Clock speed doesn't matter much when comparing different lineups. It only matters when comparing with the same model.
Pixel rate doesn't mean anything. Don't use GPU Boss, its not accurate of the actual performance, use actual gaming benchmarks from proper reviews.
The R9 280 is faster than the R9 270X Toxic no doubt else AMD just cannibalize their products if a r9 270X beats a R9 280.

Yes the higher the clock speed the faster the graphic card but not when comparing two different GPU chip.

The new R9 285 is a GCN 2.0 card that means better Mantle support and performance than the 280x which is GCN 1.0. It will have better control over the GPU performance and be very efficient. It will be at a great price as well. Two in crossfire would be great!

AFAIK only the R9 270x, R9 290/290x, R9 295x2 and the R9 285 are GCN 2.0 and can take advantage of all the great features in Mantle.

I've had 2x 280x's and then upgraded to 2x 290x so I could get awesome performance on Mantle. The 280x's are great for DX11 but the new GCN 2.0 architecture were designed for Mantle.

I would save up more for a GTX 970 since you really close to the price point.
A 650W should be ok. What brand and model is it though?

Your power supply is fine. I would recommend getting a GTX 970 which will be fine for 1080p and a good upgrade from a HD 7870. I would say the jump from a HD 7870 to a GTX 970 is better than a HD 7870 to a R9 280X right now.

Depends on your needs. Are you simply gaming at 1080p or moving to 4k for gaming? Are you just watching movies on a 4K tv/monitor?
If 4k gaming, GTX 970 will last longer. If 4k movies, either gtx 970 or R9 285 are ok.

I will be moving onto 4K gaming soon but at the moment 1080p. And I watch both movies and play games
