I bought a D-link ethernet broadband router and it works, but when I connect the DSL cable to my computer it no longer works! When i troubleshoot it the message says "DNS server not found" or something like that. It is very confusing because the internet only works with the dlink router, but not with the DSL cable directly. I noticed that the internet is slower using the D-link router as well. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

If you have DSL service, most probably you have PPPoE configuration already entered in the router. You should configure your computer to use PPPoE connection.

Click the start button, then control panel. Then select Network and Internet. Then Internet options and click on the connections tab. Hit setup and then setup new connection. It should give you an option for PPPoe DSL and will require a user name and password, if you forgot it then you will have to call your service provider to get it.

This is for WIN 7 but, most are the same and it's usauly quicker if you have an internet connections tab on you start menu and right click it to get to internet options or you can even go through your web browser.

Thank you for your response. So the thing is my landlady gives me a ethernet cable from her modem. She does not have any kind of passwords on her modem. So can i just do what you say and disregard the part that says password? I just dont realize why the dlink router, which is basically a router where more than one person can connect through a cable to the ethernet....why would that work, and the direct ethernet cable not work? I am so confused, and have done so many admin configurations flushing ips and dns...and nothing works! I just dont know why it works with the d-;link ethernet router, and not directly int he ethernet cable? The problem i have with using the d-link router is that it slows the connection down and i need to use skype for my work, so using the d-link router just makes it impossible on skype. Thank you so much for your efforts and attention on this, i really do appreciate it!

The router works because whoever installed it entered required connnection information (user name, password) into it. You have to replicate this information in Windows' PPPoE configuration.

How you know that it is the router which slows you down? It could be that the DSL line itself is slow. Check with your landlady what service she is sunscribed to.

Hi, Thank you so much for answering me back quickly!

So how do i configure the PPoe? When i go into network connections and tap on open a new connection it says something about waiting 90 seconds for the computer to find the networks...nothing happens...so not sure how to configure that?
As for knowing that the D-link router slows down the computer: when i connect the computer to the direct ethernet I can conduct skype calls (that is when it is working) BUT when it stops working, i plug in the router, and it works..but then the skype calls are so slow that the speech is blurred and cut off...so that is how i know it slows it down.

This is so odd...so anyway...any idea on how to make this connection so the PPoe thingy magigy works? ;)

Yeah. Get your own service provider. Sounds to me as if you have several ppls or rental units using the same IP and it will slow everything down to a crawl.

I live with a 12 yr old girl who has an I PAD from school, a Samsung TAB3 and an Xbox going at the same time, not to mention my lady who plays on her G4 just about every waking moment.

Just the one 12 yr old used over 100GB last month on youtube......
