Hello All,

Firstly, please forgive my "Noobness". It has been a longtime since I took those networking classes and courses in school. Since then I have relied all to heavily on associates, co-workers, and friends to handle the heavy Networking and Server Configuration stuff. Now however, I want to learn and I feel a friends project is exactly what I need to get my hands dirty again.

I must also apologize for my lack of communication skills and not being very articulate. I have a disability (dumbness) and as such I might need to go over things several times. Please excuse me for that and treat me as though I was a high-school student (though most surely know more than I do at this point).

So my friend is an Attorney and his firm needs:
*To access AbacusLaw remotely from their Laptops (2 or 3 at this time)
*He has two offices one in LA, and one in SD
*Me to build him a server capable of running two clients remotely, simultaneously
*OS/Software (MS Server 2012 ?)
*And to keep costs down as they are a really small firm with only 2-3 Employees

I was really hoping we could just set-up a NAS, but from what everyone is saying that is not going to be an option. Which is sad because now he needs to invest some serious money into this Set-up.

I have not actually set-up Server 2012 and will need your guys help and advice. I have searched a lot lately and spent a lot of time talking to people in regards to this but everyone I talk to say that this forum is the go to place for this stuff. So what I am going to do is use this post to help others. I will be using this post and your expertise as a step-by-step guide.

Please advise. The more thorough and articulate you can be, the better. Here are my questions (Will update as I go):

What Software do we need exactly ? Remember, they will be remotely accessing Abacus on the server to use in Court and in their Satellite Office in LA.

What Hardware do they need exactly ? I have built quite a few servers in the last few years but I mostly use Workstation MoBo's, Xeon's, ECC Ram however we want to keep costs down so we are hoping we can use something like:
Intel Pentium G3258
MSi Z97I AC
2x 1TB Seagate Barracuda (1x for Backup)
Corsair 8GB 1600MHz RAM

Is there a way to set it up so they don't need an extra Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor ? They will never actually use the Server for anything right ? But I do understand that this is something that they just have to accept, most likely.

How exactly do we set-up the OS for this type of Remote Access ? (Sorry for asking this but I do want to help others who are looking for this exact information so I will use this to help them)

How bad is the latency or lag going to be ?

Why wouldn't we just be able to build two PC's at the main office in San Diego, and use Teamviewer or something to access those ? Is that lag/latency going to be that bad ? That would save so much money. Please help me explain this to my friend.

Are they going to be able to access the files at the same time ? That might be a 1% case scenario.

Okay, well that about sums up where I am at right now. I was really hoping I could just set my buddy up with a NAS, and then allow it to host the files they needed, but Abacus is saying we need to build the Server, use the high-cost MS Server OS, Host the Program on that, set-up the remote access and Terminal Management ? Or what have you, and go from there. They do not know anything about Linux, or using the NAS like that, and only suggest the high-cost option.

Please post links to any Guides, or Tutorials that I will be using. I do have an intern that I am training in this matter to so for his sake I will be asking some really basic questions.

Again, please excuse my lack of understanding and knowledge but I think this will prove why Toms the best community on the interwebs. Thank you all very much.

Moving this to Business Computing, as it is far beyond just 'Networking'.

Thank you for your Service sir, and while this is Networking 101 (Simple set-up and config) I do agree it belongs in "Business Computing" even though it is a very very, small business and essentially what would be a Home Server type scenario if MS would not have dropped support for that segment.

Anyway, thanks again and please if you know anyone that might be able to help please show them this thread. We are in need of some serious help here.

Best,

Hopefully, cause man it really is sad how little I paid attention to Networking the last few years. I feel so dumb. Also, OT: Earthworm Jim has to be my all time favorite :)

Ahhhh, I actually never played that one. Nor the sequel. Man, I sure miss those good ole glory days of Console. PS was the business back then. Now I can't find a single game that holds a candle to even the average PS Game. At least PC Gaming is entering another Golden Era.
