While I was in class at my University my laptop died, due to it not being plugged in and having a bad battery. Although this has happened before, this time was different. When I plugged in my computer and turned it on, my computer was in some type of boot loop. No matter what options I choose at start up (e.g.: Launch start up repair [recommended], start windows normally, pressing f8 and choosing safe mode, ect.) it always loads right into asus preload wizard. My goal is to get back to my desktop without losing any information from my hard drive.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Once you enter the BIOS there should be a list of options somewhere on the screen that says like F10 to save and exit, etc. There should be one that says press F9 to load bios defaults or press F7 to reload optimal settings or something similar to one of those. (Not necessarily F9 and F7, those are just examples.)

Yeah I looked over those two as well as others last night and am to the point where I am researching programs that may be able to fix the problem, but I am worried about spending the money and not getting the results that I am looking for.

The two that I am currently looking at are:

1.) lazesoft: http://www.lazesoft.com/fix-boot-problems.html

2.) Easy recovery essentials: https://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/

Do you know of others using either of these programs?

Have you tried just resetting the BIOS to the default or optimal values and rebooting? Just go into the BIOS and select the desired option and see if that stops the loop. It might, it might not, but it's worth a shot before going any further with a software purchase or chasing solutions unless you've already reset and had no luck.

ahh, no I didnt. I'll give it a try once I put the hard drive back into my computer. Thanks for the suggestion.

I recently just hooked one of the hard drives up to the computer I'm on now so that I could copy some of my files over, but when I tried this with my other hard drive I came across a bit of a problem. This hard drive isn't showing up in the same way that it used to. The names were changed to "Data (E: ) and Recovery (F: )" and I cannot find any of my files on it. Here is a picture:

I'm wondering what this means and if I could repair it on the computer im on somehow.

No, it would need to be installed on the target computer. Once on the target computer you can use the recovery partition to repair, refresh or renew the boot partition but every option other than the repair will remove installed programs and applications. Personal files and documents would be saved using the refresh option but not programs or applications other than those that are a part of the original installation that was on there when it was new.

As far as the drive letters being changed, that's common when you stick the drive in another computer. You can't have two C:/ drives being recognized by the system so it will assign it a new drive letter while it's installed as a secondary drive on another system. Same goes for additional partitions. The system the drive is installed on keeps the drive letter assignments, not the drive itself, so when you install it in another system it will use any letter it wants that is not currently in use as the identification assignment for that drive.

Once you enter the BIOS there should be a list of options somewhere on the screen that says like F10 to save and exit, etc. There should be one that says press F9 to load bios defaults or press F7 to reload optimal settings or something similar to one of those.
