SSD is faster than HDD and in general you'll see faster boot and faster loading times in games. Yes you can use SSD instead of HDD but they're quite a pretty penny right now so it may be heavy on the pocket. 120GB is $80ish. Right now, if budget is tight, its best to house the OS on SSD and some major games or programs and use a HDD for other data.

SSDs are much more reliable than HDD and more energy efficient too.

Ssd's store their info electronically, hdds store it mechanically, thus ssd's read and write speeds are a lot faster than normal hdd's, you can replace hdds with ssds but they are very expensive, a good 128gb is 98 dollars ish, for a 1tb ssd it's roughly in the 400-500 dollars, it's better to store os and apps on ssd and songs etc on hdd

Yes you can use them in a single cabinet. Samsung/ Intel/ Crucial/ Kingston are major makers of SSD. Samsung EVO makes the best budget friendly SSDs with great performance, and the Crucial MX100 is not far behind. Intel 530 series is the most reliable of the lot and Kingston makes the cheapest and still solid SSD.

For the most part: Yes. There are several different flavors of SSDs, but the most common is the 2.5" SATA III, and these will fit both a desktop and most laptops too.
