How to Backup/Sync Saved Games

Going to be building a new PC soon, but I will be using the hard drive from my current system to do so. I'll obviously need to preform an OS reinstall when this happens, but I'm curious as to how to save my progress in my steam games. Does Steam sync them to your account in the cloud, or do I have to manually perform a backup somehow?

Solution
It is usually a good idea to back them up manually. If you are not wiping the drive the installs are on, the games that save there (steam\common\steamapps folder) should be fine, but you will want to backup your documents\my games folder on C: and copy them back after reinstall to keep ones that save there.
