Hi, I'm considering x99 but it looks as though my options are severely limited by the scarcity and placement of PCIe x4 slots on available boards.

Historically I've always brought ASUS. I presently have a p8p67 evo, and my q6600 board is still going strong!

Problem is, I use the PCIe x4 for a D2X soundcard. Presently, due to the slot locations, this card is jammed right next to my GPU, literally scratching the rear of the GPU board!

I love my sound card and would ideally like an arrangement where these two cards are sensibly spaced apart.

I'm not bothered by size, and I'd be completely happy with a ATX, or larger, solution.

It seems that with most boards the options are the same crammed spacing I have at present, or no pcie4 at all!

What are my options!

I would just find a board with an x16 slot where you want it and use that :)

As all PCIE slots are downward compatible, you can even plug an x1 card into an x16 slot - it won't look as nice, but it can work. Just check the online motherboard manual to make sure that the combination that you want to run will give it x4 to that slot and at least x8 to any video cards, it will work fine.

Also keep in mind that currently you can get an X99 motherboard with DDR3 memory slots or an X99 motherboard with DDR4 memory slots.

Thank you,

I've been building PC's since before the 386 DX was a thing. I consider myself to be a seasoned enthusiast... I can't believe I did not know this or think to check it out! :/

This is great news for me as can now take my pick. I think i'm going to opt for a DDR4, so i'll keep an eye out for that!

Thanks once again, I feel like a right noob.
