Hi,

I am not all that techy and need a hand!

I have bought a new computer, a Dell XPS 2720. I want to upload all my old files from my external hard drive onto this new computer.

The computer has 6 USB3 ports, but my hard drive (an Iomega SPHDU) has a USB2 connection.

When I plug it in anyhow, a window pops up in the bottom corns and it installs itself. However, the hard drive doesn't appear in My Computer.

If I go into the Control Panel and go to Devices, it appears here as an icon. But when I double click it, only it's properties come up.

Is the USB2/USB3 connection the problem? Can I buy a specific USB3 cable that will make the drive detectable? Or is something else going on?

Thanks in advance, Tom

Does the drive show up in Disk Management? If yes, does it show up as unallocated space or RAW or some other format? As far as I know you won't be able to use a USB 3.0 cable with a USB 2.0 drive. The end that connects to the drive is not like the USB 2.0 connector. Connecting a USB 2.0 drive to a 3.0 port shouldn't be a problem. Check Device Manager and report what you find.

1) Click on Start
2) Click on Control Panel
3) Click on Administrative Tools
4) Double click on Computer Management
5) Click on Disk Management

OR

Type "diskmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) in the search box (Click on Start and then type diskmgmt.msc) and then press enter.

What do you see when you do this (what drives are showing)?

Oops, just realized you are using Windows 8.1 and I gave you the directions for Windows 7.

I cannot assign a number to the disc. See below screen shot. When I right click the disk and go to select "Change Drive Letter and Paths", it is greyed out and I cannot click it.
