It seems strange, but it occurred to me that I might be able to backup an iso disk image of my win 8 box to my old phone memory and recover it later. Maybe even make it bootable!

Bootable, I highly doubt it. The architecture of the CPU is most likely not going to let you. Depending on how much room you have on your old phone, I don't see why you couldn't make an iso. You'd have to boot into a Live CD, or attach your hard drive to another computer to copy everything over though.
