Ok so this is going to be a long one...

MOBO: Asus M4A78-VM
OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 (at home)

So I purchased 2 sticks of RAM off ebay as theyre hard to come by for this MOBO now. I wanted 8GB. These were advertised as 4GB each.

RAM: Kingston KVR800D2N6/4G. (Its in the supported list for my mobo)

So I pop them in, it only reports 6GB in the Bios & in windows it says 8GB (5.75GB usable). From Resource Monitor the other 2+GB is hardware reserved... So I try it one stick at a time. One reports 4GB. The other only 2GB.

Both sticks have the same model number but this is where I noticed the difference...

There's another couple numbers on there. As follows:

GOOD STICK:

  • 9905474-029.A00LF
    BKME08B1317
BAD STICK:

  • 99P5474-013.A00LF
    BKMK0891317
Now Ive not been able to find anything from googling those numbers. Everything else on the 2 sticks is identical. So you're thinking..."its a faulty unit" "those numbers are just revision numbers" etc.

This is where it twists...I ordered from another buyer, same model number and it arrives, I put it in and same again, 2GB. It has the exact same extra numbers as the bad stick above.

Could this be some kind of older or newer revision of the same RAM model that isnt supported by my MOBO? I have no idea!?

I dont want to leave the "BAD" ram in too long for testing in case it totally corrupts my PC. Any thoughts?

Here's an output from CPU-Z: (with one good & one bad stick in)

Hi, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer our assistance. Neither of those 99 numbers coincides with part number KVR800D2N6/4G. Matching the Part number and that 99 number is how we verify if a product is valid. Since those do not match in our system the memory you received is counterfeit. I recommend requesting a refund for the memory. We do still currently manufacture 2GB modules for your system, part number KVR800D2N6/2G (http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search/?partid=kvr800d2n6/2g). On that page you can click buy and there will be links to valid resellers where the memory can be confidently purchased. For further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I...
