I doesn't come with a retention bracket and I didn't know it wasn't a drop in install. Can I switch the fan on the heatsink it came with and be okay or is the heatsink the main thing? The fan and heatsink I have now are only for a 65 watt cpu and the 3850/70 is 100 watt. Do I need to get a bracket or what?

This is my computer

Yo need a low profile downdraft hsf for sure. You should be able to use the stock retention bracket and backplate for most. Look on Newegg if you are in the USA. Also like the guy above said you need something that will dissipate enough heat for your new cpu. A block of aluminum wont cut it.

It's a store bought pc. I put a link the the specs and everything, but here's the dimensions.
Height: 36.8 cm (14.4 inches)
Width: 16.5 cm (6.4 inches)
Depth: 38.9 cm (15.3 inches)

I've looked for fans+heatsinks on newegg but from the options I chose only one comes up and it doesn't seem to be very good.

I think you have a problem. Your pc has an FM1 motherboard. The cpu you ordered is an A8-6600 with the Radeon HD 8570D. That processor is FM2 which is not comaptible with the board in the pc you linked to.

I ordered an a8-3870k, I'm looking right at it. Everything I've read stated it's an fm1.

I guess you actually ordered this- FM1 APU. A8-3850 HD 6550D. Your post says a 3850 which obviously is incorrect.

3850 and 3870 is pretty much the same thing from what I've read and been told. The 3870 is just unlocked.

I found this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103177 would this work with my case and motherboard?
Also found this bracket at amazon (http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Bracket-Base-socket-Hewlett-Packard/dp/B006JAMUZ8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1409357849&sr=8-3&keywords=fm1+retention+bracket). Would I be able to use that and the cooler that came with it or do I have to get an aftermarket heatsink?
