I am currently i the process of swapping out some parts into a new case, mobo, and gpu in an effort to upgrade my system, but i've encountered a problem. While my fx6100 fits into the GA 990fxa ud3 mobo, the heatsink doesnt have the corresponding screws in the right places, and therefore wont fit. I need some help on what to do as i am in an extremely tight schedule... the cpu should be compaatible but as it is a few years old i think the cpu has an older heatsink. I am really confused and disheartened, I would really appreciate help.

Was the FX-6100 from a OEM pre-build? Or did you buy it retail?

Depends on what heatsink your talking about. Is it the stock one? Turn it 90 degrees.

It sounds like a proprietary heat sink. You need a standard (retail) one. The type that comes with the retail processor.

Now would be a good time to purchase an aftermarket heat sink for overclocking the FX-6100.

How much do you want to spend?

If you plan on OC'ing... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

honestly whatever will fit for sure and be compatible. i dont really care how expensive it is and if it can support OCing well then i may try it. Would you recommend that one you linked and will it be compatible?

Shipping at Newegg will be as fast as you can afford to pay for.
Same with Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-RR-212E-2...

if you have it shipped out by 6pm you can have guaranteed arrival on saturday with 1 day shipping.

however... even on the west coast it is now 7:50pm which means that you likely will not get the item until monday unless the item is shipped from a very close facility.

another option...

buy something locally.

stores such as microcenter or frys electronics certainly have a vast selection. you might even be able to find something common at stores like best buy. your local pc repair shops might also have some common heatsinks like the hyper 212 around.

locally would be same day since you can pick it up tomorrow morning.

just not sure of your area... but try "electronics store ---zipcode---" or "computer store ----zipcode----" in google to see whats near you.

This is a bad time to want it overnight if you are ordering in the US. This is Labor Day weekend. Most shipments are on hold until Tuesday unless you pay A LOT.
Btw, if you have a small case and/or want an easier cooler to install, or don't expect OC'ing to be a big deal for you... this one snaps right on the AMD retention bracket with no fuss: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
And it will allow for some decent OC'ing too. The 212 EVO can be a bear to install for a novice and is a bit taller if you have a narrow case.

Okay, so I looked around a lot at local stores - an option I thought i had thoroughly exhausted - and found there was a Micro Center not too far from me. It was a great store, it's like a giant supermarket of computer parts, something I didn't think existed. But, I was able to find what I was looking for and more, and a steal discount. Thank you for listing that suggestion to me and thank everyone else for helping me - my pc that I built is now completed and working. I hope this thread can be of assistance to other people - if on a time crunch, look for a micro center for some good deals and day-of pickups.

Lucky. Unfortunately for me, the mearest Microcenter is a 2 hour drive... through Chicago traffic.
(worse during rush hour)
Anyway, glad you got your issue solved. Enjoy the new build.
