What has happened?

Etiher your harddrive is failing or your system shut down without properly unmounting the system drive causing your filesystem to become corrupted. Suggest looking at your HDD's S.M.A.R.T to determine its health.

oh and if windows was previously installed and u have a linux os installed u should get a boot loader at the start with a list of all the OS installed on ur system, if u dont get the boot loader then u can update the Linux os and it will create one.
For example if u update ubuntu it will maake a new boot loader.
